Aftercare Programmes
Supporting Thoroughbreds as they transition beyond racing, with a focus on traceability, responsible rehoming and positive long-term outcomes
Every Thoroughbred’s transition from racing is different. NZTR’s Aftercare Programmes are designed to support responsible pathways beyond racing while strengthening traceability and helping horses access additional support where it is needed.
Through the Pathways Programme and Futures Programme, NZTR works alongside Acknowledged Providers to support positive outcomes for retired Thoroughbreds, from recording and understanding their journey beyond racing to providing additional support for horses requiring rehabilitation, retraining or more time to transition.
Together, these programmes form part of our commitment to shared responsibility and ensuring Thoroughbreds are supported throughout life beyond racing.
Futures Programme
Some Thoroughbreds need more time and support to successfully transition beyond racing.
The Futures Programme supports eligible Thoroughbreds that require extended rehabilitation, retraining, behavioural support or specialist care before they are ready for their next chapter.
Delivered through NZTR Acknowledged Providers, the Programme helps create a supported pathway for horses with more complex needs, allowing appropriate time for recovery, assessment and preparation for a suitable long-term outcome.
The focus is on giving each horse the best opportunity to progress while ensuring decisions about their future are guided by their individual welfare needs.
Pathways Programme
Knowing where Thoroughbreds go after racing is an important part of responsible aftercare.
The Pathways Programme works with NZTR Acknowledged Providers to strengthen traceability as horses transition from racing into new homes and careers.
The Programme supports the accurate recording of a horse’s journey through an Acknowledged Provider, from arrival and assessment through to their next home. This helps ensure NZTR records remain up to date, provides greater visibility of outcomes beyond racing, and builds a better understanding of the pathways Thoroughbreds take after leaving the racing industry.
By improving traceability, the Pathways Programme helps create a more connected and accountable approach to Thoroughbred aftercare.
