If you are concerned about the immediate welfare or safety of a Thoroughbred, it is important to contact the organisation best placed to help based on the horse’s circumstances.
My horse needs help, who should I contact?
If you believe your horse may be eligible for a Beyond the Track Relief or Recovery Programme:
Contact the NZTR Thoroughbred Welfare team at thoroughbredwelfare@nztr.co.nz.
Our team can discuss the circumstances and help determine whether one of our Programmes may be appropriate. See the Safety Net Programmes tab for more information.
If the horse is currently with a licensed person or involved in racing:
Contact the Racing Integrity Board (RIB). This includes horses currently under the care or control of a licensed racing participant.
If the horse is owned or cared for by someone outside the racing industry:
Contact you local SPCA centre or the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) at 0800 00 83 33 if you have concerns about the horse's welfare.
Beyond the Track and NZTR work closely with the SPCA for thoroughbreds who have retired from racing. However, where a Thoroughbred is owned or cared for by someone outside the racing industry, NZTR does not have the authority to uplift the horse. The SPCA or MPI will need to assess the circumstances and determine the appropriate action.
What if the situation is an emergency?
If a horse is in immediate danger or requires urgent veterinary attention, contact a veterinarian or the appropriate emergency animal welfare authority in your area.
If you are unsure who to contact, you can contact the NZTR Thoroughbred Welfare team at thoroughbredwelfare@nztr.co.nz, and we can help direct you to the appropriate organisation.
