Responsible Rehoming Guide
Learn how owners, NZTR and providers can plan, prepare and support Thoroughbreds for safe, sustainable futures beyond racing.

A Thoroughbred’s life can involve many people. Breeders, owners, trainers, retrainers and equestrian owners can all play an important part in their journey.
Full Circle helps keep those connections alive.
Through Beyond the Track, people who have previously been connected with a Thoroughbred can register as a Full Circle contact, providing an additional point of contact if that horse ever needs support in the future.
It is a simple way to say: if this horse ever needs help, you can contact me.
When you register as a Full Circle contact through the horses' porfile, your details are linked to that Thoroughbred within Beyond the Track.
If NZTR becomes aware that the horse needs assistance, we may contact you to help us understand the horse’s history, reconnect with people who know them, or explore possible options for their future.
You might be able to provide useful information, connect us with someone else who knows the horse, help identify an appropriate home or pathway, or simply be part of the conversation about what happens next.
The aim is to create another layer of traceability and support around our Thoroughbreds throughout their lives.
No. Registering as a Full Circle contact does not automatically make you the owner of the horse, financially responsible for their care, or obligated to take the horse back.
It simply means you are happy for the Beyond the Track team to contact you if the horse is identified as needing support.
If you are contacted, we will discuss the circumstances with you and what, if anything, you may be able to do to help.
Once a Thoroughbred leaves racing, they may change homes several times throughout their life. As the years pass, connections with their racing owners, breeders, trainers and previous carers can be lost.
When a horse later finds themselves in difficult circumstances, knowing who has previously been connected with them can make a significant difference.
Full Circle helps us:
• strengthen lifelong traceability of New Zealand Thoroughbreds
• reconnect horses with people who know their history
• identify potential support earlier
• provide more options when a horse needs assistance
• complement NZTR’s existing aftercare and welfare safety nets
• build a community that remains connected to our Thoroughbreds beyond racing.
Anyone with a meaningful connection to a Thoroughbred can choose to register.
You might be their former:
• breeder
• owner
• trainer
• syndicate member
• stable staff member
• retrainer or rehomer
• equestrian owner or carer.
A horse may have more than one person who wants to remain connected. The stronger the network around a Thoroughbred, the greater the opportunity to find solutions if they ever need help.
If there is a Thoroughbred whose future you would like to remain connected to, register as their Full Circle contact through Beyond the Track.
It takes only a few minutes, but that connection could make an important difference later in their life.
